- What is an I9?
The I-9 is a form used to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment in the United States.
- Why do I need an I9 for employees?Federal law requires that every employer who recruits, refers for a fee, or hires an individual for employment in the U.S. must complete Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Form I-9 will help you verify your employee’s identity and employment authorization.
- What documents can the employee present?Depending on the employees citizenship or immigration status, USCIS has a list of documents they deem acceptable. We have the experience to determine whether they are genuine documents or not.
- How long do I have to retain an I9 form?Employers are required to retain the form for 3 years after the date of hire, or one year after the date the employee is terminated, whichever is later. Photocopies or faxed copies are NOT acceptable.
You can choose to scan and upload the original forms to store electronically. After only this can the original form be destroyed.
- How to correct an error on an I9?Employers are directed to instruct the employee to do the following to correct errors:
Draw a line through the incorrect information;
Enter the correct or omitted information; and
Initial and date the correction or omitted information
No corrections can be concealed on an I9.
